Heart tattoos have been around for as long as modern tattooing has. Old-school American tattoos often featured hearts with a banner going over them, usually as a dedication tattoo – such as dad or mom heart tattoos! Even in new school tattoos, this old-school design makes its mark!

Heart and Rose Tattoos: Magical Love

Rose tattoos represent love, romance, and beauty. When combined with the heart tattoo, a symbol of true love, you get a tattoo that is practically poetry – one that symbolizes a magical love full of romance!

Another popular symbol used with heart tattoos is thorns. A heart and rose tattoo with thorns can mean two things – the more obvious meaning is of pain, betrayal, or love lost, while the lesser yet equally poetic meaning is that the journey towards love is painful but finding it is worth the trouble.

But tattoos with thorns have yet another meaning…

Heart Tattoos and Religion: Commitment and Faith

The Christian sacred heart is the most common religious heart tattoo. It represents a commitment to Christ and reminds us of his love for us. Those who resonate with the sacred heart use this symbol to mean compassion and love, but it can also represent the loss of a loved one.

Sacred heart tattoos often feature a crown, angels, a sword, and thorns.

Hearts do feature in other religions as well, though not quite as prominently.

For instance, Buddhism also uses the heart to represent perfection, as it related to the Dharma Chakra or ‘Buddha’s Dharma’, which represents the Buddha’s journey towards enlightenment. As such, heart tattoos can also represent mindfulness and devotion.

Celtic tattoos also feature hearts to represent strength and unity. These tattoos usually combine hearts with Celtic knots.

Heart Tattoos and Grief: On Love and Loss

Heart tattoos represent love, and grief is an important aspect of love.

“Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”

― Jamie Anderson

When people are grieving, they look for something to help them hold on to the feeling of love, something that helps them remember the good that still exists in their memory. A heart tattoo can often be worn to represent the loss of a loved one, a broken heart, a long-distance relationship, and even to commemorate an extremely tragic event.

Grief heart tattoos usually have a black heart in the design. Heart tattoos often feature the name of a loved one, or black roses to symbolize loss. Heart tattoos with wings are also popular for someone who has passed away.

Other popular grief heart tattoos include dagger heart tattoos to represent sorrow (though to some they also represent courage), and the ‘stitched’ heart tattoo, which represents healing from a painful emotional scar (such as a broken heart).

A crying eye is also sometimes used in black heart tattoos to represent sorrow. Nothing says love hurts quite like this one!

Heart Tattoos and Mental Health: An Act of Self-Love

Heart tattoos are also an important symbol within the mental health community.

Symbolizing love and hope, the heart tattoo is a great message of self-love for people struggling with mental health issues. Having it be something you can carry around with you at all times makes heart tattoos a great way to remind yourself to never lose hope because you’re worth living for.

So don’t forget to love yourself

– and most of all, love this life

– because it does get better!

Heart tattoos also have an added meaning of ‘following your heart’. A very common design for this meaning is a tattooed heart with lyrics – we hear Ariana Grande lyric heart tattoos are all the rage right now!

Ornamental Heart Tattoos

And sometimes, you might get a heart tattoo just because you want to! As much as we say you should get a meaningful tattoo so you’re less likely to regret it, sometimes you just want some cool body art that you’ll cherish forever. And that’s okay too!

And there you have it! One tattoo design, so many meanings!

The bottom line, however, is that even if your tattoo doesn’t have a deep and personal meaning for you, it can still look great – and you can feel great wearing it! After all, a tattoo’s most important purpose is for you to let your unique, quirky self shine through (Zelda fans, where you at?!).
